Nova Scotia Considers Online Gambling
By: Carter Avery, Wednesday September 1st 2010
There’s been a lot of talk around Canada about initiating online gambling in the country. At a time when the US is already struggling with the future of online gambling, Canada is trying to capture the North America market. Nova Scotia is the next one that’s hoping to adopt online casinos. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation that mandates New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia itself has been opposed to it, but the province isn’t going to let that little fact stop their plans.
Finance Minister Graham Steele told the Chronicle Herald newspaper the introduction of online gambling was being developed as part of a new gaming strategy to increase the lottery interest. All four partners or provinces don’t need to agree on the products offered he has said which means that Nova Scotia should be able to move forward with their plans! The Newfoundland Premier has already indicated there will be no support from their province.
Already, the Atlantic Lottery does have a website called Playsphere that incorporates some element of online activity as a place to buy lottery tickets and play interactive games.
Nova Scotia, if introducing online gambling and online casinos will be the second province to go this way, since British Columbia was the first. PlayNow.com which is licensed in the province of BC is the first North American online casino and it has all of the different gambling types including sports betting, bingo and casino and lottery games. Poker will be introduced to the site in the later stage. The site did have a rough start with a security breach, but now PlayNow.com is in full operation! Canadian players are greatly looking forward to the introduction of new online casinos so they can provide their money to the local economy rather than internationally.
France is another country that has been kicking up their online gambling efforts. Hopefully Canada will put enough competition out there to give them a run for their money to capture the market since it doesn’t look like serious progress will be made with the US anytime too soon!
